The range and diversity of Audra's work in her career as an artist is unmatched. Audra has been awarded the Tony Awards six times, as well as two Grammy Awards, as well as an Emmy Award. The year 2014 saw her make Broadway history and became an official Tony Awards most decorated performer in six awards for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which also served as a basis for her Olivier Award-nominated debut performance on London's West End. Also, she set the record for winning the most Tony Awards by one actor. McDonald's other theater credits includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) that marked the release of her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut show, Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (2019) and Ohio State Murders (2023). McDonald's first appearance as a dramatic television actor was with the Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany SistersThe first 100 years. In the following years, she starred alongside Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC remake of Annie in 1999, McDonald was a recurring character in the NBC show Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald received her first Emmy for her role on her role in the HBO remake of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she was back on television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., starring Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries, a WB television series that debuted in 2006. McDonald then appeared as an recurring role on NBC's Kidnapped in the year following. McDonald was awarded an 4th Emmy nomination for her role in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in 2016. She starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. In 2009, she played U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018, McDonald returned to her role as Liz Reddick as a regular in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She got three Critics Choice Award nods for her performance. She's currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes's historic comedy The Gilded Age.
